The History of The Indian Institutes of Technology
The concept of the IITs was first proposed by the Sir Jogendra Singh Committee in 1946. This committee recommended the establishment of higher technical institutions in India, drawing inspiration from renowned institutions like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States. The goal was to nurture talented individuals and provide them with a holistic education combining theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
The first IIT, IIT Kharagpur, was established in 1951 with support from the government of India and a generous contribution of technical expertise from the government of West Bengal. It started functioning in the Hijli Detention Camp, a colonial-era prison. Challenges, including faculty shortage, limited infrastructure, and financial constraints, marked the early years. However, with time, IIT Kharagpur emerged as a leading technical institution in the country.
Recognizing the success of IIT Kharagpur, the government decided to establish more IITs in different parts of India. The subsequent IITs, including IIT Bombay (1958), IIT Madras (1959), IIT Kanpur (1959), IIT Delhi (1961), IIT Guwahati (1994), and IIT Roorkee (2001), came up in different regions to ensure geographic distribution and accessibility to students from across the country.
Over the years, several new IITs have been established, bringing the total number to 23 as of 2022. These newer IITs have been created by converting existing technical institutions or establishing new campuses in different states. The Modi government has also focused on expanding research and development facilities, strengthening industry-academia collaborations, and providing a conducive environment for innovation and entrepreneurship.
